How to get to the Australian embassy
The Australian embassy moved to its current location in November 2021. The Icon is one of the new buildings that have sprung up around Vienna’s main rail station (Hauptbahnhof). Various bus, tram and subway lines serve the station. For example:
- Tram lines 18 and O
- Bus lines 13A and 69A
- The U1 subway
Being near the station also means plenty of snack bars, restaurants and shops within the railway complex. Including a branch of my favourite café-konditorei: Oberlaa.
Nearby sights
The location is quite convenient for one of Vienna’s top tourist spots: the Belvedere palaces and gardens.
Belvedere has two Baroque palaces. Both the lower and upper palaces have their architectural attractions, but are perhaps best known for the top-class permanent and special art exhibitions. Upper Belvedere, for example, has Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss.
Belvedere has its own landscaped gardens between the two palaces, with two other public gardens adjoining the complex: the university’s botanical gardens and the alpine gardens run by the Austrian federal gardens authority.
Other sights nearby include the modern and contemporary art museum and centre Belvedere 21 and the Museum of Military History. The latter has some remarkable historical items inside, such as the car Franz Ferdinand was shot in, thus precipitating Word War I.
The area around the military history museum is repurposing into cultural institutions. You should find FOTO ARSENAL WIEN there from early 2025 with special photography exhibitions, for example.
